Meet Kane: The Heart Behind HEART
Kane & Kim
A legacy that lives on
When Kane passed in May 2025, the dog Kim describes as her “soul dog” left behind an enormous legacy. Today, his silhouette sits at the center of the HEART logo, a permanent reminder of the dog whose gentle spirit helped inspire this work.
HEART stands for rescue, love, and second chances. Kane knew something about all three.
Celebrating the dogs behind the label
October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month, an opportunity to celebrate pit bull-type dogs and challenge the assumptions that too often follow them.
Kane embodied so much of what those who love these dogs already know. He was gentle. Steady. Affectionate. Deeply connected to his family. And in rescue, other dogs could trust him.
A label can never tell you who a dog is. Their individual temperament, experiences, needs, quirks, and enormous capacity for connection tell a much richer story.
For HEART, Pit Bull Awareness Month is especially personal. One very special bully-breed dog helped make this rescue what it is today.
Kane's legacy is still looking for happy endings.
Today, HEART is working to give that same chance to Nova, Rosie, and every dog who comes through our doors. Meet all our adoptable pets looking for their forever homes!
